Grazalema is the small town that has lent its name to the local Nature park, and is also where we maintain the Horizon offices and other facilities.
Located in the center of the park at 832 Meters (2730 Feet) above sea level, it has been declared to be a site of cultural interest by the government and is a feast for the eyes. Typical two story whitewashed houses with tile roofs and wrought iron window dressing, located on winding narrow streets, it is the perfect expression of the typical "white villages."
Of Arabic origin, and with a population of 2,200, Grazalema has impressive facilities for tourism. Two 4 Star hotels, one three star, one two star, a hostel, camp grounds, dozens of rural homes for rent, restaurants, bars, craft shops etc provide a wide range of options for visitors.
Equidistant from Cádiz, Sevilla and Málaga, Grazalema is a perfect base for adventure tourism, enjoying the natural beauty of the area and for enjoying the local traditional culture.
Several hiking and bicycle trails depart from the village, along with more that 100 rock climbing sites. The Peñón Grande offers Alpine climbing and many interesting caves for the spelunker.
Within a 20 Km (12 Mile) radius, you can find deep canyons, white water streams; extensive caves several hundred meters deep. Tranquil lakes, lush pine forests with unique local pinsapo pines, found nowhere else in the world. There is no better place to observe and enjoy the local flora and fauna, including the Griffon Vulture and one of the largest bat populations in Europe. Endangered species like the Perdicera Eagle and the Egyptian vulture. Discover the unique Grazalema Poppy, and large populations of wild mountain goats. This unique place was the first declared nature reserve in Andalusia and has also been recognized by UNESCO as a world biosphere reserve and a protected European Union bird sanctuary.
